Burning of Quran: To Trigger a Religious War?

The Church and Religion has always had massive influence into the lives of people. In fact, religion may have been the single reason why millions of people kill and claim the lives of others. History tells us that ancient people ultimately fought for their beliefs and even up to the point where they risk their lives for it. In ancient history, there were numerous crusades launched by Christians in accordance also to several conquests done by Muslims. Today, there is still an ongoing conflict between religions although crusades and conquests are not anymore existent.

The United States of America has always been the global symbol for promoting justice and freedom. A testament to this is the large concentration of immigrants coming from different parts of the world living peacefully within the country. America also has high regard for religion as it implements religious freedom and tolerance within its constitution. As much as we want to maintain peace in the world, a series of events that took place in America will leave a definite scar and will have a huge impact unto the world.

We could never forget the September 11 attacks that ultimately destroyed two iconic towers of America and claimed over 3,000 lives as well. The sheer disaster and catastrophe brought by that event marked the beginning of a revolution. That revolution is the war on terror or the war on terrorism. And since terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda are considered Islamic activists, there have been numerous speculations that Muslims are in fact a severe threat to America. The friction now between Islam and all the other religions are stronger than ever with conflict being always a possibility.

Americans have also been furious about the planned Mosque which will be constructed near the Ground Zero site. For them, it is a sign of disrespect for the thousands who perished and for their families as well. Pres. Obama was strongly criticized for allowing the construction to push through even implying that religious freedom should be practiced at all cost. With this, several American churches have developed a certain hatred and opposition for Islam.

Rev. Terry Jones of Florida and his ministry are planning to burn the Quran on the same date where the Twin tower attacks occurred. This is in protest to the terror acts done by Islamic activists. Most of them strongly believe that Islam is a religion of terror and will only do harm to America. Upon hearing the news, the Islam community immediately condemned the activity stating that it is a direct insult to religion.

On Thursday, hundreds or even thousands of angry Afghans staged a protest and even chanting “Death to the Christians”. A top U.S. military commander based in Afghanistan stated that the burning of Quran will only endanger their troops within the region. It will also directly influence national security as thousands or even millions of Muslims worldwide will be strongly watching America. U.S. President Barack Obama has called on the church to call off such plans as it will do no good to the nation. The friction between Muslims and Christians is slowly taking shape. Without a proper resolve for such sensitive issues, we may well forget about achieving a peaceful world.
